Quote Explanation - Ellen Lupton.

"Design is as much an act of spacing as an act of marking"
Ellen Lupton, in her quote, is pointing out the importance placement, balance, size and shape in design. She mentions it is as important in the design as the image. If, for example, the illustration is fantastic, colour use is psychologically stunning and type terrific the overall design will still not have any appeal to the viewer if it is all placed awkwardly on the page.

  2. Yes I think this is great quote there are so many designs out there that are great designs and Typography, but put together clumsily and can loose the power, aesthetic and style.

  3. I agree with your interpretation Robyn. It's the all important figure/ground concept - space between elements within the design, even empty space, speaks loudly.

  4. Yes,I think placement is sometimes lost/forgotten in a work when it is surrounded by perfect elements. It is so important to bring the work together as ONE.
