POST 6.

PAUL RAND

"DESIGN IS THE METHOD OF PUTTING FORM AND CONTENT TOGETHER. DESIGN, JUST AS ART, HAS MULTIPLE DEFINITIONS; THERE IS NO SINGLE DEFINITION. DESIGN CAN BE ART. DESIGN CAN BE AESTHETICS. DESIGN IS SO SIMPLE, THATS WHY IT IS SO COMPLICATED".

Design can't be right, nor wrong, that's the beauty of design. Design is a personal interpretation, representing a purpose, which can reach you on an emotional level. You simply like it or you don't!

Design is very diverse, portraying numerous meanings and thoughts. Design seems so simple, but in the same respect, so complicated.

My understanding to Milton Glaser’s Quote!

                                                          Akasha

“The real issue is not talent as an independent element but talent in relationship to will, desire & persistence.

Talent without these things vanishes & even modest talent with those characteristics grows.”   Milton Glaser

I feel what Glaser is saying is that to be talented is great, but unless you apply yourself with a will of desire and creative drive, in daily life and throughout all different situations and have the passion behind your work, your talent can diminish, your incentive and initiative can be hollow, therefore vanishes.

Where as if you’re maybe not so talented to begin with, but your dedicated and passionate, you apply yourself to your work with creative force your talent can grow and flourish with persistence.

neville brody quote....by jules

"we are so obsessed with the net and technology that we forget the message...we imagine to be able to do anything, and our software helps us believe we can...but we must move beyond the 'how' to reconsider the 'what' and the 'why'.

neville brody

i feel that here neville is talking about the left-brain/right brain model of productivity....moving beyond the 'how' of the reasoning, rational mind and into the realm of the 'what' and the 'why' of the intuitive mind. for me this brings up the issue of creative freedom and thoughts and ideas that are unfettered by the sobering 'hows' of rational, sensible systems.
to be an artist for me means asking the right questions, so that the creative being can freely manifest unlimited possibilites as answers. so i enjoyed pondering this quote and asking myself as a graphic artist 'what' and 'why'. it made me laugh to also recognise within myself, that when i ask myself 'how' in regards to learning photoshop i feel frustrated! so i was delighted to discover that neville designed the icons above for adobe, and ive moved forward myself in focusing on the 'what' and the 'why' and feeling excited

34. Thinking is drawing in your head. Alan Fletcher

34. Thinking is drawing in your head. By- Alan Fletcher

I feel this quote, self explains what it means.
To draw is 2 put ideas on to paper.
To think is to come up with ideas in your head.

THINK- You have a thought and put your ideas to that thought, think about it and maybe change your thought about it. Possibly look at different views or sides to that thought, inspiration or idea you have bouncing around. Find a new angle for it and try to come up with better ways of doing it. You could try and see it from others prospective to come up with new ways.

Chris Nowlan - "To design is to communicate clearly by whatever means you can control or master" Milton Glaser B.1929

In my opinion the meaning of the Milton Glaser quote To design is to communicate clearly by whatever means you can control or master is that design is used to communicate a clear opinion, message, or point of view in whatever means possible, by whatever way that it can be designed or thought of.

"To me, nothing is more vibrant than having the power to do something but not having the experience of knowing what's right and what's wrong."TIBOR KALMAN

Know for his perverse optimism Kalman used to mock social issues in his projects.
Nobody really knows what's right or wrong, as I can see, when you're creating something there is NO right and there is NO wrong.
Tibor Kalman used this knowledge for his own benefit, and he was very successful in it.
As a Graphic Designer you DO have the power to create and manipulate what you want people to understand from your work, and you don't have to be concerned or be cautions about it, because it's your work and your opinion about certain subject and at the end each person will understand a different meaning from it.

Quote Explanation - Ellen Lupton.

"Design is as much an act of spacing as an act of marking"
Ellen Lupton, in her quote, is pointing out the importance placement, balance, size and shape in design. She mentions it is as important in the design as the image. If, for example, the illustration is fantastic, colour use is psychologically stunning and type terrific the overall design will still not have any appeal to the viewer if it is all placed awkwardly on the page.

POST6: STACY WHAT DOES YOUR QUOTE MEAN?

In 50 - 200 words explain the meaning of your designer's quote. Post an image if it supports your post. Comment on six other student's response to this post.
"Computers are to design as microwaves are to Cooking"

Milton Glaser
Post by Melissa Mackie
"The meaning of Glasers Quote"

To me the quote is fairly straight forward. Computers are simply a tool to design as microwaves are to cooking. A  design originates from your head, your imagination, the idea, the feeling and the reasoning. As Glaser had put it, a monkey can be taught to use a computer. It is the inventive idea which stems from the mind which creates a DYNAMIC design, not a computer. A computer is simply there to add the finishing touches if the idea of the design calls for it.

STEFAN SAGMEISTER (born 1962 in Bregenz, Austria) is a graphic designer. Designed album covers for Lou Reed, the Rolling Stones, David Byrne, Aerosmith and Pat Metheny. THINGS I HAVE LEARNED IN MY LIFE SO FAR Complaining is silly. Either act or forget. Being not truthful works against me. Helping others people helps me. Everything I do always comes back to me. Money does not make me happy. Travelling alone is helpful for a new perspective on life. Assuming is stifling. Keeping a diary supports my personal development. Trying to look good limits my life. Worry solves nothing. Material luxuries are best enjoyed in small does. Stefan Sagmeister is one of today's most innovative and influential graphic designers. His conception and application of graphic design goes above and beyond traditional notions of the practice, taking it to the realm of performative and conceptual art, painting and sculpture. Sagmeister is most widely known for his album cover artwork for bands like The Rolling Stones, Talking Heads and Lou Reed, and for books, like Mariko Mori's Wave UFO for the Kunsthaus Bregenz, which function as sculptural objectstefan  www.sagmeister.com www.designmuseum.com www.designboom.com  www.hillmancurtis  www.zoomin.com

Rene Gruau was born in Italy in 1909. In the 1940’s and 50’s Gruau became a favourite of the haute couture world, working with Femina, Marie-Claire and other high-style magazines. Some of Graua’s best work can be seen in the dramatic visual statements he rendered for Christian Dior and Hubert De Givenchy. In 1948 Rene Gruau left for the United States to work for Harper’s Bazaar and Vouge, before becoming the exclusive artist for FLAIR. Almost right up until his death at the age of 95, Gruau continued to work for the greatest names in Haute Couture.
Today Gruau’s works are collected and exhibited by the finest art institutions including the lourve in Paris. Rene Gruau’s artistic passion, intensity and technical brilliance have left a high-water mark on art history. With his trademark use of his powerful minimal line, Gruau’s style combined seductive sophistication with classic beauty, grace and sensual elegance. Gruau created posters and ads for high fashion houses and magazines. With his works that suggested an inspired melding of Japanese drawing and Toulouse-Lautrec posters, Gruau, who was self-taught, formed a bridge between the celebrated French poster tradition and the modern advertising.
