James Victore is a self taught, independent artist and designer. His work is strong humorous and unforgiving, he is an unrepentant communicator and activist and has created the most thought provoking posters of the last 20 years.
Victore claims to have no formal education, quote:”I have never learnt the right way to do anything “.instead his education came from great mentors, teachers and influences.
As a university freshman he ended his first semester with a score of 0.04 GPA and was asked to leave, he later transferred to the School of Visual Art (SVA) in New York ,but he only made it to the second year before he was asked to leave again, it’s not that Victore didn’t like design, he quotes “I just couldn’t find the excitement in it ”
Today Victore teaches graphic design at the SVA in New York City where he tries to be the teacher that he needed: less a teacher more a fire starter, Victore discourages his student from becoming designers, that follow trends but to be open and expand their ideas of what design is and could be.

ReplyDeleteYou're right Rita - through his images James Victoire is a very strong communicator. As he said, never learning the right way to do anything gives a raw originality to his work. He'd be a very motivating teacher.
